LOS ANGELES, CA - The Iona men's water polo team opened up play on its annual
west coast trip with a convincing 20-9 win over Occidental College Thursday evening.
Thirteen different Gaels found the net as the Maroon & Gold won the first contest on
the California trip for the third time in the last four years.
The Gaels opened up the scoring early, taking a 5-1 lead after one quarter,
aided by three goals from freshman, and California native, Tyler
Mancuso. Iona would add five more goals in the second quarter to go
into the half ahead 10-5 before taking the game out of reach by outscoring the Tigers
9-1 in the third.
Mancuso had three goals for Iona on a team high five shots. Sophomore Lee Stiles also
had three goals, as well as one assist to lead the Gaels with four points overall.
Senior Matt Joslyn had two
goals, one assist and one steal while his brother freshman Nicholas
Joslyn had two goals of his own. Sophomore Matthew Stelnicki
also found the net twice for Iona in the game while contributing two assists. Seniors
Cameron Hudson
and Ryan Scott each had
one goal apiece while Hudson went a perfect three-for-three on swimoff opportunities. Junior Cody Siemeck,
sophomores Bryan Driscoll,
Jonathan Hernould, Sean
Davis and freshmen Kyle Elmore and
Jake Lloyd each
had one goal. Juniors Connor Bracken
and Kristian Bocage
each had two assists in the contest while senior captain Hunter
Carrier had one helper.
Sophomore Stefen Hill had
five saves in three-plus quarters of work while classmate Ian
Redding stopped two shots in a relief role.
The Gaels are back in action Friday with their first two contests of the Concordia
Invitational, beginning with a matchup against Fresno Pacific at 1:50 pm EST.
