Water Polo Takes Eighth At Eastern Championships

CAMBRIDGE, MA - The Iona College men's water polo team fell to Harvard 13-10 in the seventh place game of the 2011 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Eastern Championship at Blodgett Pool.

Coming off a 13-4 loss in the regular season to the Gaels and an 13-11 defeat in the Northern Division third place game, Harvard fell behind early to Iona once again as senior Matt Joslyn scored with 3:18 left in the first period.

The lead lasted for 63 seconds until freshman Jake Lloyd was called for a five-meter penalty. and Harvard took advantage to knot the game at 1-to-1 with 2:15 left in the period.

Harvard broke the ice in the second period at 5:34 but Iona countered at 4:01 with a tally by Joslyn before the Crimson received back-to-back strikes to go ahead 4-2 at the break.

However, the Gaels pulled even on goals by senior Cameron Hudson and Joslyn at 7:46 and 7:22 to begin the third period and balance the scoreboard at 4-to-4.

The teams continued to respond to each other's offensive outbursts as Murphy scored on a man-up opportunity at 6:47, but freshman Tyler Mancuso (Fr., Laguna Beach, Calif./Laguna Beach) answered when the teams returned to even-strength with a marker at 6:31 to make it 5-to-5.

Iona and Harvard continued to slug it out as the Crimson converted on a man-up at 4:56 to put the Harvard back in front before junior Cody Siemeck netted an advantage score for the Gaels at 4:38 to keep the game tied at 6-to-6.

However, Harvard pulled away in the final three minutes of the period with a four-goal scoring spree and a 10-6 lead with a period left to play.

The Gaels closed the gap to start the final eight minutes of action as Lloyd (7:27), Hudson (6:26) and freshman Ian Thompson (5:09) rattled off back-to-back-to-back even strength strikes to pull Iona to within one at 10-to-9 with five minutes to play.

Goals at 4:11 and 2:05 gave Harvard a 12-9 lead with two minutes of time left on the game clock.  Iona attempted to climb back into the game as sophomores Lee Stiles converted on a man-up opportunity (1:50) to make it a two-goal game, but the Crimson cushioned the lead with 1:28 left as Harvard held on for the a three-goal victory.

For Iona, Lloyd, Joslyn and Hudson led the way with pairs of goals, while sophomore Stefen Hill stopped seven shots between the pipes.

The win marks the second season in a row that the Crimson ended the Gaels' year with a loss in Cambridge as Harvard defeated Iona 7-6 last year in the Northern Division Championship fifth place game at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
