CAMBRIDGE, MA - The Iona College women's water polo team picked up the program's 250th career victory Saturday with an 11-4 win over Mercyhurst in the team's second game of the day at the Harvard Invitational.  Earlier in the day, the Gaels hung close with 12th ranked San Jose State before falling to the Spartans 12-9.

Against the Lakers, Iona used a 6-2 first quarter to propel them to an easy victory.  Senior Mackenzie Mone scored three goals and had three steals on the defensive end.  Sophomore Erika Lauraitis had three goals and one assist.  Senior Cecilia Leonard had two goals, one assist and four steals while junior Alyssa Turza had three goals and one steal.  Senior Caitlin McGregor had two assists and three steals.  Sophomore Amy Olsen spearheaded the defense with an astounding nine steals.  Sophomore Marisa Gaynor had five saves in net along with one steal and one assist.

"A solid team win with excellent defense all around," said head coach Brian KellyAmy (Olsen) was outstanding defensively and our two D's Leonard and Mone denied any inside game.  Any time you can hold a solid team like Mercyhurst to four goals, it's a good defensive effort."

Tied at four at half, San Jose State used a 5-2 third quarter to distance itself from the Gaels.  Leading the Gaels was Olsen, who notched three goals, two steals and drew four kickouts.  Mone had two goals, four steals and one field block.  Turza had two goals and two steals while Lauraitis had one goal and two steals.  Leonard had four assists and two steals.  Gaynor had 12 saves and four steals.

"It was a solid back and forth game vs one of the top teams in the nation," said Kelly.  "We played solid defense throughout and were an opportunity away from really having a chance to get over the hump."

Iona is back in action Sunday at the Harvard Invitational, beginning with a game against Bucknell at 10:20 am.
