NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College women's water polo team drew the seventh seed in the 2013 NCAA Championship and will face off against the number two seed Stanford, as announced Monday evening during the NCAA Selection Show on NCAA.com.
The Gaels and Cardinal will square off Friday, May 10 at 1:45 pm in the first quarterfinal matchup of the day. The games will be held at Blodgett Pool on the campus of Harvard University with a live stream available on NCAA.com.
The Gaels were one of six teams to automatically qualify for the tournament after claiming their third consecutive MAAC Championship with a 12-9 victory over Wagner Sunday afternoon. Junior Marisa Gaynor was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player after recording 29 saves after two games while MAAC Offensive Player of the Year Amy Olsen and All-MAAC First Team honoree Alyssa Turza were named to the All-Tournament Team.
The Cardinal, the two-time defending NCAA Champions, was one of two at-large selections, along with third seeded UCLA.
In 2011, the teams squared off in Iona's first ever NCAA Championship contest. Though the Cardinal came out victorious, Iona put across seven goals in the contest, tied for the third highest goal total allowed in a game by the eventual national champions that season.
