NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Iona College women's water polo junior Cecilia Leonard has been selected as one of 17 collegiate water polo players to try out for the World University Games in China, representing Team USA.

"This is an incredible opportunity for Cecilia," said Iona head coach Brian Kelly.  "I'm confident that her talent will show through at the training camp and, should she be selected, she'll be a fantastic representative of both Team USA and Iona College."

Of the 17 athletes invited to try out, the top 13 will be selected for the U.S. squad.  Those advancing to compete in China this summer will also earn a guaranteed try-out to represent USA in the 2016 Olympic Games.  Leonard will join the other hopefuls at the June 30-July 3 World University Games training camp at the USA Water Polo National Training Center in Los Alamitos, CA.

This summer's games will be held in Shenzhen, China from August 12-23.  The international sporting competition is staged every two years in a different city, with the summer games consisting of 12 compulsory sports and up to three optional sports chosen by the host country.  The World University Games are open to all student-athletes that have not been out of college for more than a year and that are between 17 and 28 years old.  Entries are accepted from any country which is eligible for the Olympic Games and from any national federation which is affiliated with an appropriate international federation.
