FAIRFIELD, CT - Despite scoring seven goals on eight shots to better Sacred Heart by three in the second half, the Iona College lacrosse team's comeback effort came up shy in a 12-10 loss on the road.  The Gael offense showed an all-around effort as Iona had seven different goal scorers in the game.

Iona (0-3) made its run early in the second half to cut the Pioneers' (1-1) lead from five to two midway through.  Brittney Mabus got the scoring started with an eight meter score just 1:25 into the half and after SHU's Alyssa Dorsey pushed the Pioneer lead back to five at 25:59, Iona used a three-goal spurt to pull within two.  Three different Gaels found the back of the cage with Nina Veneziale and Mabus scoring their second goals of the afternoon, both unassisted, and Kylie Gregory burying a Caitlyn Collins feed to force a SHU timeout with 14:06 left down 9-7.

Sacred Heart answered with three straight goals by Kaitlin Rochler and Kate Kmiotek to push the lead to 12-7.  Elizabeth Coholan registered her second tally of the afternoon and her fifth of the season to kick off a string of three Iona goals over a one-minute span.  The Gaels ended the day's scoring with the 3-0 run but ended up two ticks short by the final horn.

Collins led the Maroon & Gold with three points on three assists.  Coholan, Veneziale, and Mabus each had a pair of goals while Emily Taddei, Casey Scully, Brenna Lade, and Gregory each added one.  The Gaels held an 8-7 edge in caused turnovers, led by Coholan's five.  Goalkeeper Maria Ortiz made eight saves.

Iona returns home on Saturday afternoon to play host to Central Connecticut at 2:00 pm.
