BROOKLYN, NY - The Iona College lacrosse team posted its second consecutive victory, defeating Long Island by a score of 13-11 on the road.  Casey Scully scored the game-winning goal, breaking an 11-11 tie with just over eight minutes left in the second half.

Nina Veneziale had another strong performance with a game-high five goals and now leads the Gaels with 13 in her rookie season.  Her first marker of the afternoon came 17:20 into the contest on an unassisted shot, pulling Iona to within one at 3-2.  Emily Taddei had previously found the back of the net with help from Brittney Mabus to tie the score at 1-all in the ninth minute.

Mabus, Caitlyn Collins, and Veneziale combined for four Iona goals over the final 12 minutes of the first half to give the Maroon & Gold a 6-4 edge at the break.  The lead was quickly erased as the Blackbirds opened the second period with three straight goals to pull in front, 7-6, 4:05 into the half.

Kylie Gregory ended the run with her ninth goal of the season, assisted by Collins with 25:11 on the clock.  Collins then netted a goal of her own 11 seconds later off a feed from Brenna Lade and, 14 seconds after that, Elizabeth Coholan added another to put Iona ahead 9-7.

Long Island registered three of the next four tallies to make the score tied at 10 and both teams matched goals to once again tie things up at 11.  With 8:11 to go in the game, Scully was awarded a free-position shot and was on target with the attempt to give the Gaels a 12-11 lead.  Veneziale closed the deal with an insurance goal with two seconds remaining.

Along with Veneziale, Collins also finished with five points on three goals and two assists.  Scully led the squad with three ground balls while Kayla Smith added two and had a team-best two caused turnovers.  Goalkeeper Maria Ortiz had five saves in her second career win.

For Long Island, Ashley Delaney led with four goals, followed by two each from Jenna Schauder and Annie Kalata. Netminder Jacqueline Simonian recorded five saves in the loss.

Iona led 28-22 in shots and 14-11 in draw controls.  The Gaels are back in action at home on Friday (Mar. 11), hosting the Columbia Lions at 3:30 pm.
