NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Iona College lacrosse head coach, Michelle Mason has announced the signing of eight future student-athletes to National Letters of Intent. Emily Barron, Amanda Desmond, Hannah Fasano, Thea Leitman, Mary Kate McCormick, Laura Waldron, Michelle Whitham, and Colleen Wright will all don Maroon & Gold for the 2013 lacrosse season.

These 8 players possess the mentality and dedication to immediately add to Gael Lacrosse, and also possess the potential and ability to elevate Gael Lacrosse to a new and exciting level.”
Barron is a 5'10" defender from North Syracuse, NY. A four-year starter for Cicero-North Syracuse High School and was also a member of the U-15 National Lacrosse team. Barron has also spent time playing for the Women’s Division National Team, Team NY1, Team Upstate, the Under Armour All-America Team, and Central New York Elite Lacrosse Club (CNYELC). She was named to the Second team All-League in 2009 and was named to the Second Team All-CNY in 2010 and 2011. In 2011, she was also ranked 15th amongst top defenders in the country by ESPNHS.
Desmond is a 5'8" defensive starter from Northport, NY and is also a crucial member of the Long Island Elite Yellow Jackets. She is capable of playing multiple positions throughout the lacrosse field. In 2011, Northport won the New York State Class A Championship. Desmond is a two-year Scholar Athlete and senior captain, while also playing for the Long Island Elite Yellow Jackets.
Fasano is a 5'3" attacker from Somers, CT. Fasano will enter Iona as a 100 career goal scorer from the Ethel Walker School, where she was a two-time captain and three-year letterwinner. Fasano participated in the 2010 World Scholar-Athlete Games, is a member of the New England Prep School All-Star squad, and competed on the club level for the Connecticut Lacrosse Futures (CTLF).
Leitman is a 5'8" goalie out of Lloyd Neck, NY. Leitman will be a three-year letterwinner in lacrosse at Cold Spring Harbor High School and a member of Team Elevate. She received All-conference recognition and was a member of the 2011 squad that went undefeated in Conference C of Nassau Country. Leitman was named a Scholar Athlete and received the Coach’s award during her time at Cold Spring Harbor.
McCormick is a 5'7" midfielder from Port Jefferson Station, NY and is a four-year letterwinner in lacrosse at Comsewogue High School. During her four years at Comsewogue, earned All-Division honors during both her freshman and sophomore seasons. She received All-County honors as a junior when she led her team in both goals scored and assists enabling Comsewogue qualify for the playoffs for the first time in five years. During her high school career, McCormick competed with the Long Island Elite Yellow Jackets. McCormick has been on the honor roll and inducted into the National Honor Society. She was named class president all four years as well as an Academic All-American. McCormick was also named athlete of the year as a senior. Her father, Patrick McCormick, is an Iona Alumni, class of '87.
Waldron, a 5’4" defender, comes from Massapequa, NY and is a four-year member of the lacrosse squad at Massapequa High School. Was a finalist in the Nassau County Lacrosse Championships in 2009, 2010 and 2011. She earned All-County Honorable Mention, Massapequa Scholar Athlete 2009-2011, and US Lacrosse Academic All-American in 2011. Waldron was a member of the Long Island Wave Lacrosse Club. At Massapequa, she was a member of the Mock Trial team and is a member of National Honor Society and in 2011; she was named the winner of Outstanding Physical Education Award presented by NYS AHPERD Nassau Zone. Waldron also played for Long Island Wave.
Whitham is a 5'4" midfielder from Alexandria, Va. Whitham is a member of the five-time defending VA state lacrosse champions at national powerhouse St. Stephens and St. Agnes High School. Michelle competed at the club level with the select VA/DC Metro area Capital Lacrosse Club. Whitham also lettered in soccer at St. Stephens and St. Agnes.
Wright is a 5'6" defender from Huntington, NY. Wright was named the 2011 L.I.M.L.F Fran McCall Unsung Hero Award and will be a four-year letterwinner at Huntington High School. Along with Desmond and McCormick, Wright is a product of the Long Island Elite Yellow Jackets Lacrosse Club. Wright also lettered in Field Hockey and Basketball at Huntington. Away from the field, Wright has been a Juvenile Diabetes Youth Ambassador and participated in the JDRF Walk for a Cur, JDRF Fashion show and JDRF Fall Festival.
The Gaels kick off the 2012 season on Feb. 18 with a contest at UConn. The team hosts Sacred Heart in the home opener on Feb. 22 at Mazzella Field.
