NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Junior Kylie Gregory scored three goals and had two assists as the Iona College lacrosse team took a low scoring defensive style victory over Central Connecticut State University 7-3 on Sunday afternoon at Mazzella Field.
Sophomores Nina Veneziale and Brenna Lade each scored two goals as Iona outshot the Blue Devils 28-13 over the contest, including a 13-5 edge in the second half.
Gregory scored the first Iona goal in the opening minute off an assist from freshman Meghan Testoni. The Blue Devils tied the game two minutes later on a Betsey Vendel goal. Lade and Gregory added the next two goals from the Maroon and Gold to take a 3-1 lead with 20:09 remaining in the half.
In the second half, CCSU made it a one-goal contest on a free position shot. The hosts scored three consecutive tallies with Lade, Gregory and Veneziale. Junior Brittney Mabus and Gregory each had assists over the run.
Veneziale scored the final Iona goal with 19 seconds remaining. Sophomore Maria Ortiz made seven saves for the Gaels in the win.
The Gaels will travel down to Mount St. Mary’s next Saturday for a 4 p.m. start.
