NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, NY - Junior Kylie Gregory continues to shine and set a new personal best finishing with seven points as the Iona College lacrosse team routed Niagara 16-7 on Saturday afternoon at Niagara Field.
Iona (7-5, 1-1 MAAC) dominated from buzzer-to-buzzer which included two separate 4-0 runs in both periods. Junior Brittney Mabus also had a career day finishing with six points, scoring and assisting three times each.
Senior Casey Scully added four tallies, as the Gaels outshot the Purple Eagles 30-24. Freshman Meghan Testoni also scored two goals with single tallies from sophomores Angela Grous and Brenna Lade. Senior Emily Taddei was credited with an assist on a Gregory marker. Sophomore netminder Maria Ortiz made 11 saves for fifth win of the year.
Niagara (3-6, 0-2 MAAC) had seven different scorers on the night with Emily French leading the squad with two points. Kaitlin Sorgi made 10 saves in the defeat.
Iona scored the first two goals of the game 45 seconds apart as Gregory and Scully scored their firsts of the day. The visitors increased their lead by six, 7-1, after scoring five consecutive times, completing Gregory’s hat trick and giving Mabus and Scully two goals each.
The Gaels ended the half with a 9-3 lead and a 17-10 edge in shots.
The Maroon & Gold continued to dominate in the second half, beginning with an early tally by Lade on the free position. Niagara attempted a comeback scoring back-to-back but another free position goal by Grous and Scully adding her fourth secured the victory.
Iona put the game out of reach scoring four more times with goals from Mabus, two from Testoni and the final goal from Gregory.
Iona will welcome Marist on Wednesday afternoon at 3 p.m. at Mazzella Field.
