RIVERDALE, NY - Senior Casey Scully and Junior Kylie Gregory each netted three goals each, as the Iona College lacrosse team picked up an important MAAC road contest, defeating Manhattan College 12-6 on Wednesday evening.
Gregory added an assist to lead the team with four points. Senior Emily Taddei finished with three points, scoring twice and assisting on a goal. Junior Brittney Mabus and sophomore Brenna Lade finished with two points each, with Mabus ending with two assists and Lade with two goals.
Iona (9-6, 3-2 MAAC) outshot Manhattan (4-10, 2-4 MAAC) 28-15 with a 15-4 edge at the half. The Gaels continue to dominate on clear opportunities, 20-22, and were perfect in the opening frame 11-11. Iona finished 33 percent on free-position shots.
Iona scored the first five goals of the game with Gregory and Scully scoring twice and Taddei opening up the scoring at the 25:09 mark. Manhattan broke the five-goal difference, but Iona added three more before the half with Taddei adding her second and then a pair from Lade.
Maintaining an 8-1 lead at the half, Iona continued to dominate in the second half even though the Jaspers outscored them 5-4 in the second stanza.
Leading 8-2 Testoni scored on the free-position at 22:09. Two minutes later, Gregory notched the hat trick. Scully and Veneziale scored the final two Iona goals and led 12-4, but Manhattan attempted a comeback and hit the back of the net twice but a big save by Ortiz with 2:32 remaining gave the team the victory.
Manhattan finished with six difference goal scorers and goalie Christin Fiorinelli made 11 saves in the loss.
Iona will conclude the 2012 regular season on Saturday afternoon at noon against Canisius at Mazzella Field. Prior to the start, the Gaels will recognize their five graduating member of the Class of 2012.
