JACKSONVILLE, FL - Senior Heidi Gregson advanced to Saturday's quarterfinal in the 1,500-meter run and led four members of the Iona College men's and women's track teams at the 2012 NCAA Championship Preliminary East at the University of North Florida.
Gregson was fourth in her preliminary heat to automatically qualify for the next round. She ran a time of 4:30.15, under three seconds behind the heat winner. Gregson was 33rd overall in the six heat preliminary event. She will race again Saturday at 6:45 pm for the chance to advance to the NCAA Championship at Drake University in two weeks.
Senior Alexander Soderberg courageously battled the Florida heat in his 10,000-meter performance Thursday night. Soderberg was cruising in 10th place with about 120 meters to go before collapsing of heat exhaustion. After regaining his feet, Soderberg managed to finish the race in 36th place, short of qualifying for the 10k final in Des Moines, IA.
In the women's 10k, juniors Hollie Rowland and Marion Joly-Testault finished back-to-back in 22nd and 23rd place. Rowland's time of 35:39.65, topped her teammate by under seven seconds (35:46.38).
Freshman Regina Neumeyer competes for the Gaels Friday in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at 9:30 pm.
