NEW YORK, NY - The Iona College women's indoor track team opened up the 2012 year at the first Saturday Night at the Armory event at the Armory Track and Field Center in Manhattan. The Gaels earned points in both the mile and 3000-meter events, highlighted by freshman Regina Neumeyer's third place finish in the 3k.
Neumeyer's time of 9:35.66 was less than a second behind second place Heather Wilson from Connecticut. It is the second fastest time in Iona history in the 3k event and a new Iona freshman record. She bested McKayla Plank's rookie record of 9:42.79 from 2006. Junior Hollie Rowland finished right behind Neumeyer in 9:41.73 while junior Marion Joly-Testault was sixth overall (10:09.08). Salome Kosgei is Iona's 3k record holder with her 9:16.72 on Feb. 9, 2007 in Boston.
Sophomore Katie Niblock led Iona in the mile event, posting a fourth place finish and a time of 5:03.85. Freshman Lauren Calvino finished seventh (5:18.30) while sophomore Chelsea Hanson was eighth (5:20.62).
The Maroon & Gold saw the debut of two freshmen in the 800-meter event. Marlene Delices (2:26.59) and Erica Fellin (2:37.55) finished 16th and 20th respectively.
The Gaels return to the track on Jan. 27 in split-squad action at the Metropolitan Championships at the Armory and at the Terrier Classic in Boston, MA.
