NEW ROCHELLE, NY – Iona College men’s soccer junior Alvaro Torrecilla was named to the 2011 Capital One Academic All-America® Men's Soccer Third Team announced Thursday. Torrecilla was recognized for both his academic and athletic performances as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Torrecilla was an integral part in Iona’s 15-4-1 campaign this season, tallying eight points from the midfield position. He recorded three goals and two assists including two game-winning goals against Mount St. Mary’s and Rider.
Academically, the Madrid, Spain native is Iona’s reigning Scholar-Athlete of the Year posting a 3.98 GPA through four semesters with a major of International Business. He was named to the Academic All-District First Team earlier this fall.
To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
