EDISON, NJ - Junior midfielder Franklin Castellanos was named MAAC Co-Preseason Player of the Year as the Iona College men's soccer team was picked to finish second in the 2012 MAAC Men's Soccer Preseason Coaches' Poll.
Castellanos had 20 points in 2011, tied for third most in the league, with three goals and 14 assists last season. His 14 assists led the nation and were six more than the second MAAC student-athlete. Castellanos was an All-MAAC and NSCAA All-North Atlantic First Team member and was also on the 2011 MAAC All-Academic Team. He shared the preseason honor with Jordan Ayris of Fairfield University.
Fairfield, the defending MAAC Champions, finished first in the poll with 96 points and seven first place votes, while the Gaels had 92 points and the remaining three first place votes. Loyola University Maryland was picked third with 82 points and Marist College finished in fourth place with 57 points. Siena College was fifth with 53 and Niagara University was one point behind in sixth. Manhattan College, last year's championship runner-up, was picked seventh. Canisius College was eighth (31), followed by Saint Peter's College (27) and Rider University (22).
The Gaels placed four players on the Preseason All-MAAC Team, tops in the conference. Joining Castellanos on the team are senior back Robbie Krohmer, senior midfielder Ansger Otto and junior forward Samuel Adjei.
The Gaels begin their quest for the MAAC Championship Friday, August 24, when they take on Adelphi.
