NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Two athletes from the Iona College men's and women's soccer programs have been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Teams as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Junior defender Roberto Hernandez-Raaen was chosen as a First Team member while senior defender Amber Blocher represented the Gael women on the Third Team.
Hernandez-Raaen has started all 16 games for Iona this season as part of a defense that has allowed only 11 goals all year. Prior to the season's start, he was named to the 2009 MAAC Men's Soccer Preseason Team. As an All-District First Team member, Hernandez-Raaen is eligible for Academic All-American status.
Blocher is second on the Iona squad with seven points this season and has recorded three goals, including two game-winners. She has been a member of the 2007 and 2008 MAAC All-Academic Teams.
To be nominated for an Academic All-District team, a student-athlete must maintain a 3.30 cumulative GPA and be a starter or key reserve on their team.
