NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Iona College men's soccer freshman F Ignacio "Nacho" Maganto earned Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week honors for his performance last weekend. In addition, the Gaels dropped to No. 19 on the latest NSCAA national poll.
Maganto had both goals for the Gaels' in the squad's 2-1 win over Marist this past week. In the 26th minute, Maganto took a pass from teammate Franklin Castellanos and chipped it over the Marist goalkeeper from 15 yards out to put the Gaels ahead 1-0. In the 34th minute, Maganto scored his second tally which turned out to the game winner on a shot that found the low corner of the net.
It's Maganto's third MAAC weekly honor after he earned Rookie of the Week on Sep. 6 and Oct. 3. He's the second rookie to earn the Offensive Player of the Week accolade, two weeks after Fairfield's Jordan Ayris.
As a result of their first loss in eight contests, a 1-0 overtime defeat at Siena on Sunday, the program slipped to No. 19 on the latest NSCAA national poll. Iona sits at No. 23 on the NCAA's Ratings Percentage Index with its 12-2 overall record. The 12 wins are tied for second most in the NCAA heading into Wednesday's contest vs. Army. Castellanos maintains a slim lead on the NCAA assist leaderboard with 11, one more than Kentucky's Matt Lodge.
