NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College men's soccer team suffered a second-straight overtime heartbreaker in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play on the road. Fairfield's Jon Clements scored in the 95th minute to beat the Gaels.
A tactical match throughout, Iona withstood a 9-0 shot deficit in the first half as rookie netminder Borja Barbero stopped the three on net. The Gaels turned the tide in the second half, taking a 8-5 lead in shots. Junior Alvaro Torrecilla was turned away twice by Fairfield keeper Michael O'Keefe early in the half and rookie Ignacio Maganto's potential go ahead tally in the final five minutes of regulation was also turned aside.
In overtime, junior Ansger Otto's attempt sailed wide in the first minute. Clements shot in the 95th minute was just inside the post for the game's only goal.
Barbero had five saves while his counterpart O'Keefe stopped three.
The No. 19-ranked Iona squad looks to turn it around in the final weekend of the regular season when they host Manhattan and Saint Peter's at Mazzella Field. The Gaels stand two games back in the loss column to the Stags for first place. All 10 teams in the conference qualify for the MAAC Championship this season, held at Disney's Wide World of Sports in Lake Buena Vista, FL.
