TEN NEW GAELS FOR 2009
NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Iona College men's soccer head coach Fernando Barboto has announced his class of ten incoming players who will join the squad for the 2009 season. "Our coaching staff worked very hard to put this class together," said Barboto. "It is an extremely talented group that we believe have the work ethic and commitment to make an impact!"
Robbie Krohmer is a 6'0" defender from Northport, NY. A graduate of St. Anthony's High School, Krohmer was part of the New York State Olympic Development Program and the U18 Met Oval US Development Academy. "Robbie is a very physical, powerful, and experienced defender who can contend for playing time among the back four as a freshman."
Alex Abdalla is a 5'8" midfielder out of Central Bucks High School in Doylestown, PA. Abdalla was a Pennsylvania Olympic Development Program participant and played club soccer for the VE Blast. "Alex has good balance, one-on-one attaching strength, and a strong left foot. We believe he will have a strong four-year career at Iona."
Raymond Hunter is a 6'1" defender from the Cobequid Educational Centre in Nova Scotia, Canada. Part of the Canadian National Pool, Hunter played for the Nova Scotia Provincial team and competed in the 2009 Canada Games. "Raymond has the size and strength to come in and be in contention for minutes in the back four."
Brenden Shumberger is a 6'1" goalkeeper from Mount Pleasant, SC. A graduate of Wando High School, Shumberger attended the FC Bridge U18 US Developmental Academy and was a SCYSA ODP Region III player. "We believe that Brenden will have a great career at Iona in the goal. He is a very determined, self motivated, hard working, and talented goalkeeper."
Doug Stephens is a 5'8" midfielder/defender from Tomball, TX. A graduate of Concordia Lutheran High School, Stephens was an All-American high school athlete and also played for the Dallas Texans and Texas Heat Soccer Club. "Doug's physical strength and speed coupled with his versatility will allow him to be an impact player for us."
Jordan Cunliffe is a 5'8" defender from Riverdale, UT. Cunliffe graduated from Bonneville High School and was a member of the Utah Rush FC. "Jordan has great athleticism for the college game. We feel he is a very strong defender."
Alvaro Torecilla is a 5'9" midfielder from Madrid, Spain. Torecilla comes to New Rochelle as a transfer from Hannibal-La Grange College, and previously played for Real Madrid FC Youth U10-U16 and FC Adarve in the Division De Honor. "Alvaro's technique is fundamentally strong, and he will add to our team's possession and attack oriented style of play."
Mario Di Miceli is a 5'10" forward from Villers le Bouillet, Belgium. Di Miceli attended College Saint Veronique and played for Standard Liege FC Youth. "Mario is a very intelligent soccer player around the goal, therefore we believe he will have a very strong career at Iona scoring goals."
Michael Jordan is a 6'3" goalkeeper from Jamison, PA. A graduate of Holy Ghost Prep, Jordan played club soccer for the VE Blast. "Michael is very athletic with great size and room to grow. He will have a strong career at Iona."
Victor Munoz is a 5'7" midfielder from Madrid, Spain. Munoz attended I.E.S. Ramiro De Maezto High School and played for Real Madrid FC in the Youth U10-U16 division and the Division De Honor. "Victor's great change of pace, one-on-one ability, and left foot will make him a candidate for playing time immediately."
