WEST HARTFORD, CT - The Iona College baseball team pounded out a season-high 17 hits and 16 runs in a 16-6 win over Hartford in non-conference action at Fiondella Field. After falling behind 3-0 after two innings, the Gaels (13-24) scored 16 of the game's next 19 runs to defeat the Hawks on the road.
Every Iona starter recorded at least one hit and all but one scored a run in the win. Junior 3B Chris Burke went 4-for-6 with three runs scored and an RBI while also recording his 17th stolen base of the year. He hit a solo home run - his seventh of the year - with one out in the third inning. Sophomore SS Matthew Kriss went 3-for-5 with a career-best five RBI. He scored twice and hit his second collegiate homerun, a two-run shot with two down in the third. Sophomore CF Anthony Muccio matched a season-high with three hits, all singles in the win.
Junior 1B Michael Chiaravalloti went 2-for-4 with two walks, three runs scored and two RBI. He continued his torrid hitting stretch of late with a double and his fourth home run of the season, a solo shot to lead off the fifth. Chiaravalloti has raised his batting average nearly seventy points to .321 over his last six appearances, hitting 10-for-18 with six extra base hits during the stretch.
Junior DH James Beck was 2-for-5 with two walks, two RBI and two runs scored. He posted his team leading 19th double of the season to plate a run in the eighth. Senior 2B Nick Rossetti drove in three runs while rookie LF Joe Torres scored three times for the Gaels. Torres stole his 23rd and 24th bases, leading both Iona and the MAAC in the statistic.
Senor LHP Brian Callahan (3-1) picked up his third win of the year tossing 4.2 relief innings. He allowed a run on four hits in his team leading 13th appearance of the season.
The Gaels continue non-conference play on Thursday when they travel to Staten Island, NY to take on Wagner. Iona then returns home for a three-game MAAC series with Saint Peter's on Saturday (Apr. 30) and Sunday (May 1).
