NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College baseball team continued its offensive explosion from the past week in a 16-3 victory over Saint Peter's in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action at Salesian Field.
Trailing 2-0 after the top of the first, the Gaels scored 15 runs before the Peacocks were able to respond. A five run second inning and a seven run fifth was where the Maroon & Gold did most of its damage.
Seven of Iona's nine starters posted at least two hits in the win. Sophomore CF Anthony Muccio set the table for the Gaels in the lead off position with a 2-for-4, three run and three RBI effort. His two-run single with the bases loaded in the second inning was the biggest hit of the game for the sophomore. Rookie RF Joe Smith also had a bases loaded two-run single in the second inning, the hit that Gave Iona a lead it wouldn't relinquish. He was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and the two RBI.
Senior C Chris Griffin continued his torrid hitting on the weekend with three hits in four at bats. He scored three times and drove in a run with a walk. In two games vs. Saint Peter's he was 5-for-7 with five runs scored, with an on-base percentage of .778.
Senior 2B Nick Rossetti, juniors DH James Beck and 1B Michael Chiaravalloti and sophomore SS Matthew Kriss also chipped in two hits in the win. Beck and Chiaravalloti extended their hitting streaks to nine and 10 games respectively.
Sophomore RHP Matt Marley made his first weekend start of the season tossing seven effective innings for the Gaels. Marley allowed three runs on 12 hits with three strikeouts but found a knack for the right pitch at the right time inducing three ground ball double plays in the seven innings. Junior RHPs Anthony Castellitto and Vincent Parisi tossed a clean eighth and ninth inning for the Maroon & Gold in the victory.
The Gaels hit the road for eight straight games before returning home for the final weekend of the season. Iona completes its non-conference slate with contests vs. two BIG EAST opponents on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Gaels take on St. John's in Jamaica, NY to begin the week before a trip to New Brunswick, NJ and a date with Rutgers on May. 4.
