BRONX, NY - Iona College baseball rookie RHP Max Bruckner tossed seven innings of two hit ball to help lead the Gaels to a 4-1 victory over Lehigh at Fordham's Houlihan Park. Bruckner allowed a run and struck out five batters his second victory in three starts.
The Maroon & Gold jumped on the MoutainHawks with three runs in the first two frames. Junior 2B Bobby Vitulano scored the game's first run in the Gaels opening at bat scoring from second base after senior SS Matthew Kriss reached on an error. Following a one-out double by junior RF Joe Smith, sophomore 3B Matt Hratko scored from third on an error with rookie LF Joseph Sessa at the plate. With two out, Smith came home on a passed ball to give Iona a 3-0 advantage.
Iona led 4-0 after five innings. Rookie PR Travis Mistretta scored on a Kriss sac fly with one out in the fifth.
With the bases loaded and one out for Lehigh in the top of the sixth inning C Tim McKay scored on a fielder's choice as LF Casey Turner beat out a potential inning ending double play to drive in his squad's lone tally.
The Gaels scored four runs on four base hits. Hratko was responsible for two while Smith and Vitulano had the others. Smith and Sessa each stole a base in the win.
Sophomore RHP Steve Basile tossed two scoreless innings to pick up the save. He allowed two baserunners via the walk in his appearance.
The Gaels complete action at Fordham tomorrow at noon when they take on the Lehigh again in a single nine-inning contest.
