NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College baseball team forged a doubleheader split with Saint Peter's this afternoon in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action at Salesian Field. The Gaels dropped the opener 6-3 before an offensive explosion and a 13-1 win in the nightcap.
Despite seven of Iona's nine offensive starters recording hits in the contest, the squad was unable to push across more than three runs in game 1. After Saint Peter's scored a single run in their first two at bats, the Gaels knotted the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the third. Senior DH Nick Rossetti singled home rookie LF Joe Torres for the team's first run. Junior 3B Chris Burke hit a sacrifice fly to even the score.
The tie was short lived as the Peacocks scratched across two more in the next frame. Iona got a run back in the eighth to pull with in one. Saint Peter's added two key insurance runs in the top of the ninth to round out the scoring.
Sophomore SS Matthew Kriss was the lone Gael with multiple hits in a 2-for-4 effort. He hit the team's only extra base hit with a double in the sixth inning.
After allowing four runs in the first four innings rookie LHP Eddie Macaluso bore down and stretched his appearance to eight innings. He allowed 11 hits and struck out three batters in 121 pitches.
The Gaels scored early and often in the nightcap, putting up a crooked number in four of their six at bats.
Burke was the hitting star, with a 4-for-4 effort including his team leading eighth home run of the year. He scored twice and drove in four runs in the win. Junior DH James Beck went 3-for-4 with two runs scored. He drove in all three of his home runs with a long, three-run home run to highlight an eight run fifth inning for the Gaels. With a hit in the first game, Beck has hit safely in eight straight games. Rossetti also drove in three runs and was 2-for-3 with a walk. Senior C Chris Griffin was 2-for-3 with a walk with an RBI and two runs scored. Junior 1B Michael Chiaravalloti extended his hitting streak an Iona season-long nine games with a hit in both ends of the doubleheader.
Senior LHP Justin Wiley was virtually unhittable in six innings of work. He allowed two singles to Peacock CF Preston Aldridge while retiring the other 18 batters he faced. He struck out seven batters with no walks before being relieved for the final inning with the Gaels leading by double-digits.
The two teams complete their three game series tomorrow at Salesian Field at noon.
