NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, NY - The Iona College baseball team's offense exploded for 20 hits in a 13-6 win over Niagara in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action at Bobo Field. Junior CF Joe Torres and sophomore LF Jimmy Guiliano accounted for four hits apiece in the victory.
The Gaels never trailed in the contest taking a 3-0 lead after two innings. Niagara got two back in the bottom of the third before the Maroon & Gold posted two in the fourth and three in the fifth to extend their lead to 8-2. In the sixth, the Purple Eagles crept back with four tallies to cut the deficit to two runs. The Gaels put the game away with five more runs in the eighth and ninth innings to come away with the 13-6 win.
Torres was 4-for-5 with a walk, four runs scored and three runs batted in. His three-run home run in the fifth inning gave Iona a six-run cushion. It was the junior centerfielder's second long ball of the season. Guiliano was 4-for-6 with two runs scored and two RBI. He had a run scoring double in the fourth inning.
Sophomore RHP Steve Basile (1-2) picked up the win. He allowed two walks and no hits in one inning of work. Senior RHP Matt Marley pitched the middle 5.1 innings allowing six hits, and four earned runs with six strikeouts. Senior RHP Derrick Bligh closed the final 2.2 allowing two hits for the Maroon & Gold.
Niagara RF Joel Klock had two of the home team's eight hits in the contest. Jim Fort took the loss in one inning of work.
The game was delayed for almost four hours due to high wind conditions in Western New York.
Iona is back in action at home on Tuesday against Stony Brook at City Park.
