PRINCESS ANNE, MD. – The Iona College baseball team scored two runs within the first three innings of tonight’s nightcap to earn a split of the day’s doubleheader at Maryland Eastern Shore to close out the three-game series.
Throughout both games today, Matt Flannery picked up four hits that included two triples to help drive in a run in six at-bats with two runs scored. Nine others picked up a hit on the day while the Gaels (4-6) drew six walks. Both games were played as seven-inning contests.
The Maroon & Gold created a 2-0 lead in the day’s opener with a one run in each the second and third innings. Brian Picone earned a bases loaded walk to drive in the lone run of the second before Flannery tripled to lead off the third and later scored on a wild pitch to put Iona ahead 2-0.
The Hawks (2-11) cut the deficit in half with a run in the bottom of the third on an error before tying the game in the fourth as Jordan Wesley earned a RBI with a sacrifice fly.
Flannery led the fifth off with his second triple of the game and scored in the next at-bat on a Sean Scales sacrifice fly to put Iona back ahead 3-2. However, two runs in the sixth by UMES put the hosts ahead 4-3 with a pair of RBI hits from Jordan Martin and Justin Somerville.
The Gaels looked to rebound quickly to start the final game of the day and series as, starting with Flannery continuing his strong day with a RBI single to score Fran Kinsey for the game’s opening run. Kinsey scored again in the third, this time an unearned run on a Niko Switalla double down the right field line.
The run support was more enough for Patrick Ryan to earn his first win of the season by pitching six of the game’s seven innings. Ryan struck out five batters while allowing just two hits in his effort before handing off to Andrew Camiolo. Camiolo earned his first save on the young season by pitching a scoreless seventh with a strikeout included.
Iona returns to the road on Tuesday and Wednesday for a pair of games at James Madison, part of nine straight games on the road. Both days are scheduled for 6:00 pm starts.
