Lawrenceville, NJ- Senior RHP Marty Hand tossed a complete-game seven hitter in the opener in leading the Iona College baseball team to a MAAC doubleheader split with Rider at Sonny Pittaro Field. The Gaels (14-28, 6-13 MAAC) took the first game 3-1 before dropping the night cap 10-3.

The Broncs (16-23, 9-10 MAAC) got on the board in the bottom of the second. RF Nick Wojnowski singled home CF Jon Leise with one down. It was the last of four straight singles in the inning.

The Gaels knotted the score in the fourth. Sophomore C Andrew Wernicki drove in classmate LF Keith Kenny with a single. Kenny - who has been thriving this past week in the lead off spot - reached base with a single to start the inning and then advanced to second on a passed ball.

The visitors added two more in the fifth. Sophomore SS Joe Lorenzo led off with a single to center field. He was driven by the next batter, senior RF Kevin McGovern who recorded his first triple of the season. McGovern would score a few pitches later on a balk by Rider.

Senior RHP Hand (4-7) threw a complete game seven-hitter in the win. He allowed just one run and walked one with six strikeouts in his fourth win of the season. He finished the game strong, retiring 15 of the last 16 batters faced including 14 in a row before allowing a single in the ninth inning.

Junior CF Paul Salerno was the lone Gael with multiple hits, a 2-for-3 effort including his team leading 12th stolen base of the season.

Wojnowski and Leise each had two hits. Petrowski (4-5) took the loss allowing seven hits and striking out four in the complete game effort.

In game two, Rider got on the board early and often scoring all 10 runs in the first four innings off Iona starter Bobby DiNuzzo.

The Gaels scored in the top of the second as Wernicki scored an unearned run on a failed double play attempt by the Broncs.

The Maroon & Gold's other two tallies came in the top of the sixth. Rookie DH Andrew Passerelle plated two runs with a two-out single up the middle.

Rider starter Jimmer Kennedy allowed five hits over seven innings and struck out eight. Five different Iona players were responsible for the five hits.

The two teams complete the three-game series tomorrow at noon.
