GAELS FALL TO PEACOCKS AT HOME IN DOUBLEHEADER SWEEP
Wiith the Gaels down a run in the top of the ninth inning, Saint Peter's LF Kevin Kallert hit a grand slam home run to put his team ahead by five.
Iona scored its lone run to knot the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the third. Junior CF Paul Salerno hit a one out single and proceeded to steal second on a failed pickoff attempt. He advanced to third when the Peacock first baseman's throw went into left field. He was driven in by rookie LF Chris Leahy who hustled out an infield chopper between the pitcher and the first baseman with two men out.
Saint Peter's went ahead in the seventh, scoring an unearned run off Iona's bullpen. Prior to the ninth inning grand slam, all three runs in the game were unearned.
Salerno was 2-for-2 with a walk while stealing two bases in the contest. Junior RHP Bobby DiNuzzo had a solid outing allowing four hits and an unearned run but labored through 96 pitches in 5.1 innings. Freshman Justin Wiley (1-3) took the loss in relief.
The night cap was a pitchers duel until the top of the seventh. Both teams tallied their first runs in identical fashion in the second innning. A leadoff double, a bunt single and a sacrifice fly accounted for the 1-1 tie through six innings.
In a random occurrence, the Peacocks scored in the second inning, with five players coming to the plate facing just five pitches from Iona junior LHP Kevin Carmody. 3B Jim O'Brien led off with a fluke double. His line drive struck off Carmody's ankle into no man's land in left field as he raced around to second base. 1B Joe Ramano found a good spot in the infield for a bunt single that advanced O'Brien to third. On the first pitch, C John Lynch skied a ball to center field for the sac fly, RBI.
Freshman 2B Mike Walraven led off the bottom of the second with a double. His hit found a hole between the left fielder, shortstop and third baseman for the leadoff two-base hit. Salerno recorded his third hit of the day by beating out a sacrifice attempt for a bunt single of his own. Senior 3B A.J. Dederick recorded an RBI on a sac fly of his own.
The Peacocks scored all four runs in the top of the seventh on RBI base hits that barely made it through the infield. SS Conor Mulee picked up the first RBI on a chopper that found its way over the head of Walraven at second base for the first run. A sac bunt that resulted in an error plated the visitors' second run. A bloop single to right and an RBI fielder's choice accounted for the scoring in the contest.
Walraven had two hits in the loss. Carmody (0-4) struck out four in the complete game effort.
The two teams finish the series tomorrow at noon on Senior Day for the Gaels.
