NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College men's basketball team received a warm welcome from the campus community upon arrival to the Hynes Athletics Center on Wednesday. More than 100 members of Iona's faculty, administration, students, alumni and fans greeted the Gaels as they returned home from their flight from Dayton.
Senior Vice President for Advancement and External Affairs Paul J. Sutera and President Joseph E. Nyre, PhD thanked the team for its performance throughout the 2011-12 campaign. Head Coach Tim Cluess and the program's five seniors acknowledged those in attendance for the welcome back to campus.
Iona completed a successful 2011-12 campaign earning the seventh MAAC Regular Season Championship in school history and the program’s first ever at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament. The Gaels finished with a 25-8 overall record, matching the fourth-highest win total in the 70+ seasons of Iona basketball.
Five seniors led the squad this season including Randy Dezouvre, Trinity Fields, Mike Glover, Jermel Jenkins and Scott Machado. Machado finished his career as the MAAC’s all-time leading assist man with 880 career dimes. The mark ranks 18th all-time in NCAA history. Machado’s 1,613 career points is 10th all-time at Iona and he is the first NCAA player to record more than 1,600 points, 8000 assists and 500 rebounds. Glover became the 32nd 1,000+ point scorer in school history and just the third to accomplish the feat in less than two seasons. Jenkins appeared in 129 games, a mark eclipsed only by his teammate Machado. Fields was a valuable four-year performer for the Gaels while Dezouvre spent his last two collegiate years in New Rochelle with the Gaels.
Iona’s 50 wins in the last two seasons marked the second-highest two-season total in program history.
