Machado and Glover Named to USBWA All-District Team
ST. LOUIS, MO – Iona College men’s basketball seniors Scott Machado and Mike Glover have been named to the USBWA Men’s District II All-District Team, as announced by Joe Mitch, Executive Director of the USBWA on Tuesday afternoon.
Joining Glover and Machado on the District II list, which includes players from New York, New Jersey, Delaware, The District of Columbia, Pennsylvania and West Virginia are Jason Clark from Georgetown, Moe Harkless from St. John’s, Scoop Jardine and Kris Joseph of Syracuse, Kevin Jones from West Virginia, Herb Pope and Jordan Theodore from Seton Hall and Zack Rosen from Pennsylvania. Jones was named the Player of the Year from the district and Jim Boeheim from Syracuse was named Coach of the Year.
Machado continues a historic senior campaign for the Gaels, leading the nation in assists and assists per game. With 317 assists in 32 games played, he averages 9.9 per game. Machado is looking to become the first player in 16 seasons to average double-digit dimes. He is also the first player in the NCAA since 1993 to record more than 300 assists in a single-season.
The senior point guard averages 13.6 points per game and shattered his career-highs in field goal percentage, three-point field goal percentage and free throw percentage this season. He ranks No. 19 all-time in the NCAA and No. 1 in the MAAC and school history in career assists (870). With 1,598 career points scored, he is No. 10 all-time at Iona.
Earlier this season, Machado was named a John R. Wooden Award finalist along with the Naismith Award and is a candidate for two additional postseason awards: The Bob Cousy Award -given to the nation's top point guard - as one of 11 finalists on a list that will be cut to five before the week's end; The Lou Henson Award – given to the Mid-Major Player of the Year.
At The MAAC Tournament, Machado was named the Pepsi Max MAAC Player of the Year. Machado added 18 and 24 points, respectively in the MAAC tournament against Marist and Fairfield and had a combined 15 assists over two games.
Glover, a 6-foot-7, 215-pound forward from the Bronx, N.Y., earned a spot on the All-MAAC First Team for the second consecutive year. He finished the regular season ranked second in both scoring (18.1 ppg) and rebounding (9.1 rpg). Glover is also second in the nation in field goal percentage, netting 64.7 percent of his attempts from the field. For the second time in his college career, he was named the Oscar Robinson National Player of the Week after averaging 20.7 points and 7.5 rebounds in wins over Richmond and Vermont in December 2011. A three-time MAAC Player of the Week, he recorded 13 double-doubles and posted double figures in 29 games played this year.
In the MAAC Tournament, Glover score 29 points in the quarterfinals against Marist and then had 19 in the semifinals against Fairfield.
