NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Iona College men's basketball seniors Tre Bowman, DaShawn Gomez and Mike Poole have been selected to compete in the 2014 Gotham Hoops Invitational, Sunday, Apr. 13 at Farmingdale State College. The event was created to serve as a showcase for the top seniors in the Metropolitan area.
Participants of the event include local Division I, II and III standouts and representatives from the American, Atlantic 10, Big East, Colonial, Metro Atlantic and Northeast Conference, among others. In addition to Iona's senior trio, the MAAC is represented by Manhattan's Rhamel Brown, Marist's Jay Bowie, Quinnipiac’s Ike Azotam and Umar Shannon.
Bowman played two seasons for the Maroon & Gold and was a member of the Maroon & Gold's MAAC Championship squad in 2013 as a junior. He averaged 8.3 points and 3.8 rebounds in his first season. This past year, Bowman's role expanded and his performance followed suit. One of many focal points of the Gaels' high-octane offense, he registered career-highs in nearly all statistical categories including points (13.9), rebounds (4.5), assists (1.3) and minutes (31.4) per game. The 6-5 wing poured in 20 or more points in eight contests in 2013-14, a feat accomplished only once before in his career.
Gomez was also a two-year player for Iona following a successful career at Antelope Valley College (CA). A backup point guard for the Gaels, Gomez connected on 12-of-32 three-point field goal attempts (37.5) as a senior and held an incredible 4:1 assist-to-turnover ratio (82 assists, 20 turnovers) in 56 games at Iona. Prior to Nwe Rochelle, he was named Honorable Mention All-State (CCCAA) and First Team All-Foothill Conference for his play during the 2011-12 season. The 6-2 guard averaged 11.3 points and 5.3 points per game.
Poole joined Iona for the 2013-14 campaign after three seasons at Rutgers The 6-5 forward averaged 6.0 points per game as senior in 2013-14. The former St. Benedict's (NJ) standout registered career-highs in rebounds (4.2) and assists (1.9) this season helping the Gaels to 22 wins and a MAAC regular season championship. Poole appeared in 128 career games as an NCAA Division I performer with Iona and Rutgers. and scored 721 points, grabbed 443 rebounds and dished out 165 assists.
The Gotham Hoops Invitational is operated by Gotham Hoops, LLC and founded by Ray Anczelowicz. Gotham Hoops started as a platform promoting boy’s high school basketball athletes. Since launching GothamHoops.com, it has become a recognized promotional and scouting basketball media outlet within New York City and the surrounding boroughs.
The invitational features guest speakers, workouts, measurements, team practices and a media session for its participants. Doors open to the public at Farmingdale State College in Farmingdale, NY on Apr. 13 at 5:30 pm. Tip-off times for the two games are 6:00 and 8:00 pm. Tickets are $5 for current students and $10 to the general public and seating is general admission.
