EDISON, NJ - Iona College women's basketball freshmen guards Damika Martinez and Aleesha Powell received All-MAAC postseason honors, as announced by the MAAC on Monday evening.
Martinez was the only freshman to be named to an All-MAAC Team, as the first-year guard was recognized on the Second Team. Martinez was also named to the All-MAAC Rookie Team as was Powell.
Martinez, led the league in scoring, averaging 16.1 points per game. She was the top freshman in rebounding (4.9), field goal percentage (41.2), and was third among MAAC Rookies in three-point field goal percentage (32.2). She was named the MAAC Rookie of the Week four times and MAAC Player of the Week on Jan. 9.
Powell was third among league rookies in free throw percentage (74.0). She scored 7.6 points per game and also had 44 steals on the season. Powell earned league Rookie of the Week honors twice.
The All-Rookie Team consists of Martinez and Powell, Canisius' Kayla Hoohuli, Loyola's Kara Marshall, and Niagara's Meghan McGuinness. One of these five players will be named the 2011-12 Rookie of the Year, also selected by the MAAC head coaches. The Rookie of the Year will be announced at the Postseason Awards Show on Thursday, March 1 at 6:30 pm at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass. The show will be broadcast live on MAAC.TV.
