NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College women's basketball team moved to 10-0 in conference play with its 16th straight win, a 66-54 victory over Saint Peter's Sunday afternoon in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action at the Hynes Center. The Gaels trailed in the contest for just 23 seconds as they moved to 11-2 in their last 13 contests against the Peacocks.
Junior guard Damika Martinez led four Gaels in double figures with a game high 22 points. Sophomore forward Joy Adams had 16 points, 10 rebounds and three assists for her 17th double-double of the season. Junior guard Aleesha Powell had 10 points and two assists while sophomore guard Aaliyah Robinson scored 10 points, her fourth double digit effort in the last five games.
Iona got out to a 5-2 lead in the first period before four straight points by the Peacocks gave Saint Peter's a 6-5 lead with 14:59 remaining. From there, the Gaels answered with a 15-5 run, taking a 21-11 advantage on a jumper by Adams with 6:58 left in the first.
The Maroon & Gold extended its lead to a period high 18 points on a free throw by Martinez with 19 seconds left in the half before a Saint Peter's layup in the final seven seconds trimmed the lead to 16, 37-21, at intermission.
A three by Adams with 18:43 left in the second pushed the Iona cushion to a game high 19 points, 42-23. The Peacocks answered with a 11-5 run to cut the Iona lead to 12, 52-40, on a layup by Aziza May with 8:05 remaining.
With Iona ahead 58-46, a pair of back-to-back Martinez threes extended the lead to 18 and put the game out of reach. A late 8-2 charge by the Peacocks trimmed the deficit to 12 but the Peacocks were unable to get within single digits late. The Peacocks were led by Kaydine Bent's 17 points and 10 rebounds while Smith had 11 points.
The Gaels are back in action Thursday, when they host Fairfield for a 7:00 pm start.
