NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College women's basketball team jumped four spots to No. 12 in this week's CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 Poll. The Gaels (17-2, 10-0 MAAC) picked up 415 points in the poll, nearly 100 more than a week ago and are joined in the poll by Marist, who sits tenth overall.
The Maroon & Gold picked up three more conference victories last week to move to 10-0 in league play. Iona is currently riding a 16 game winning streak, tied for the fourth longest in the nation and the longest in program history.
Iona is the lone program in the country with a top-five scorer and rebounder in junior guard Damika Martinez and sophomore forward Joy Adams. Martinez is fifth in the nation with a 24.2 points per game average while Adams is third in rebounding with an average of 14.1 boards per game. Junior guard Aleesha Powell is connecting on conference best 52.6% of her attempts from behind the arc and is averaging 13.5 points per game in conference play.
First year head coach Billi Godsey has the most wins in the country this season by a rookie mentor, and second most of any coach in their first season with a program. Godsey's .895 winning percentage is the best of any first year head coach in the nation as well.
Iona is back in action Thursday evening at 7:00 pm, when it welcomes Fairfield to the Hynes Athletics Center.
