Coach Mike Barroqueiro: An Open Letter To My Team
What a season it has been!!! Through all the highs and lows, and even moments when it seemed like time was standing still, the one thing I can say, is that it all went by too quickly... After all, the best part of any season is the time you get to spend with some special people, all focused and committed toward achieving a common goal... But rather than looking at it as if that time is over, I’m more excited than ever as I believe a new journey is just beginning!
As we prepare for a long off-season, full of hard work both, on and off, the soccer field, I’m excited for what the future of this program will bring... A future, so bright and full of promise due to a foundation that was so successfully put in place this season. A foundation which was constructed based on the fundamentals of competition - hard-work, attention to detail, and an undeniable sense of team responsibility... You see, throughout this past season, we were not only working together to achieve a goal for the present, but we were also, and more importantly, setting standards that this team will live by for the foreseeable future of this program and thus ensuring future success and that is something you could never put a value on...
But in the end, as we take a step back to reflect on all that was Iona Women’s Soccer in 2011, I am proud of each and every one of you and of what we’ve accomplished together. From moments of individual brilliance to some exciting team triumphs and even a few heartbreaking setbacks, it was a season driven by incredible emotion and passion as well as dedication to self and team. It was a time surely filled with memories that we will all carry with us throughout our lifetimes and although there may have been a few losses along the way, they could never outshine all that we gained...
So as we close the book on an exciting 2011 season, I fully intend on taking with me the gifts I gained along the way and with them, making 2012 a real season to remember!!! So thank you to all my Gaels for a wonderful year and I hope you are just as excited as I am as we prepare for what lies ahead! As we press on, one thing is certain; it truly is a very exciting time to be a Gael!!!
With all my respect & admiration,
