NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Senior forward Safi Ayinde's 69th minute goal proved to be the difference as the Iona College women's soccer team moved to 2-1 on the season with a 1-0 victory over Sacred Heart Friday afternoon at Mazzella Field.
"We use every early season non-conference game to build as a team and grow through each contest," said head coach Linda Hathorn. "We are excited and proud of today's win, but know we need to continue to work hard as we move towards conference play."
In the first 45 minutes of the contest, Iona was outshot 3-2. In the second period, the Gaels controlled the attack, outshooting the Pioneers 11-3, including the game-winning tally.
After a shot from freshman forward Charlotte Stuart was blocked, Ayinde found the open net from 10 yards out for her first goal of the season.
"We are not a straight forward 90 minute team," said Hathorn. "We were disciplined in our tactical attack and defense and allowed ourselves opportunities in the second half."
Iona held a 13-6 advantage in total, with freshman midfielder Julia Campagna leading the way with three attempts. Iona also held a 7-6 advantage in corner kicks.
Graduate student Lauren Ferris made three saves, including a one-on-one stop in the 37th minute of the first half, to record her second shutout of the season.
"That was a great veteran stop by Lauren," said Hathorn "Everything she did on that play was from experience."
The Gaels continue non-conference action Sunday afternoon at Binghamton. Game time is set for 1:00 pm.
