NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College softball team dropped a pair of non-conference games to Rutgers University Wednesday afternoon at Rice Oval.  In a game one pitchers' duel, the Scrlet Knights prevailed 1-0 before taking game two 4-1.

In the opener, Rutgers' Loren Williams broke up a scoreless tie in the sixth inning with a home run over the left field fence, putting Rutgers out in front 1-0.

Rutgers starter Alyssa Landrith retired all 21 Iona batters to face her, tossing the first Rutgers softball perfect game since April 6, 2000.  Landrith struck out five in seven innings of work.  Senior Sarah Jackson took the loss for the Gaels, allowing the lone run on five hits and striking out nine.

In game two, it was the Gaels who struck first, when senior Alyssa Maiese, the game two starter, helped herself out with a home run over the center field fence, putting Iona on top 1-0.

Rutgers woudl tie the game in the fifth, and score in each of the final three innings to pick up the sweep. In the fifth, Kylee Bishop drew a one-out walk and was moved over on a sacrifice bunt. An Iona error allowed Williams to reach and Bishop to score to tie the game at one.

In the sixth, A leadoff double by Jennifer Harabedian was followed by a passed ball to put a runner on third base with no outs. Harabedian was sent home on a fielders choice by Ashley Bragg, to give RU its first lead of the contest at 2-1.

The Scarlet Knights added two more insurance runs in the seventh. Ashley Alden singled to lead off the inning and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Curran then doubled to right field, allowing Alden to slide in safely with the third run of the game. With Curran moving to third on the throw to the plate, an RBI single by Brittney Lindley scored Curran from third and pushed the away team's lead to 4-1.

Rutgers' Noelle Sisco allowed one run on five hits and matched her season-high in strikeouts with five to pick up her second win of the year. Maiese falls to 12-10 on the year after allowing two earned runs on six hits.
