Maiese, Jackson Earn NFCA All-Region Honors

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - For the first time in program history, two Iona College softball players were named to the All-Great Lakes Region Second Team, the National Fastpitch Coaches Association announced Thursday.  Redshirt-senior Alyssa Maiese and senior Sarah Jackson each made the second team at utility and pitcher, respectively.

Maiese, the MAAC Co-Player of the Year and All-MAAC First Team selection, is in the top five in the MAAC in most offensive categories, including third in slugging percentage (.567), second in runs batted in (42), second in doubles (15), third in home runs (nine) and third in total bases (97).  In the circle, Maiese has a conference leading earned of run average of 1.25 and in the top three of most categories, including third in opposing batter average (.216), third in strikeouts (213), first in strikeouts looking (89) and tied for first in wins with 17.  Maiese was named the Most Outstanding Player of the 2012 MAAC Softball Championship after batting .375 in the five Iona games, with three runs batted in and two runs scored.

Jackson, the MAAC Pitcher of the Year and a All-MAAC First Team honoree, is second in the MAAC with a 1.26 ERA and a record of 17-12. The right-hander has tallied a MAAC-best 235 strikeouts in 195 innings pitched for the Gaels this season and held her opponents to a conference-best .199 batting average.

Iona is back in action tomorrow evening at 10:00 pm when they take on No. 1 California in their opening game of the 2012 NCAA Regionals in Berkeley, CA.
