QUEENS, NY - The Iona College softball team scratched out a 3-1 extra innings win over St. John's Saturday afternoon in the second game of a non-conference doubleheader with the Red Storm at Red Storm Field. The Gaels dropped the first contest of the day, 4-0.
In the opener, St. John’s got on the board in the bottom of the first inning. Senior Kristi Cady hit a double off the left-center fence before senior Kacee Cox knocked her in, with a single up the middle. St. John’s received insurance runs in the fourth inning, when Chrissy Montez launched a three-run homerun to push the Red Storm ahead 4-0.
Sophomore Ashley Beza was dominant for St. John's, striking out seven. Senior Sarah Jackson took the loss for Iona, allowing six hits and four runs in six innings, while striking out 10 batters. Iona was only able to muster six hits in the contest, three off the bat of senior Deanne Algeo.
In the second game, St. John’s struck first, after three and a half scoreless innings. After Cady drew a walk, she stole second base to put herself in scoring position. Cady scored following a Cox double off the fence in left-center field.
Iona opened the final frame with a double off the bat of freshman Briana Schauer. A walk, followed by a sacrifice bunt put runners on second and third with one out. Algeo continued her strong day with a sacrifice fly to center.
In the eighth, Eileen McCann doubled to left field with out. After a single by seniorAllyssa James put runners on the corners, sophomore Katie Jansson knocked in the winning run with a sacrifice fly to left field. Iona added another run on an RBI double by Schauer.
Senior Alyssa Maieseearned the win, going the full eight, allowing just two hits, and one run while striking out seven. The Gaels are back in action Tuesday, when they travel to Hempstead for a single game with Hofstra, beginning at 3:30 pm
