NEW ROCHELLE, NY - A trio of Iona College indoor track performers earned a quartet of bids into this weekend's NCAA Championships at Boise State University. Seniors Mitch Goose, Heidi Gregson and Leonard Korir will represent the Maroon & Gold in Idaho.
Goose qualified for the men's 3,000-meter run with his time of 7:51.75 at the UW Husky Classic on Feb. 10th. It was the 13th fastest time in the NCAA this season.
For the second straight year, Korir qualified for both the men's 3,000- and 5000-meter NCAA Championships. His MAAC record time of 7:51.83 earned a bid into the 3k event. He is seeded in the race just behind his teammate Goose. Korir will look to defend his 5k title against a highly competitive race field. Korir's time of 13:19.54 at the 105th Millrose Games was the third fastest time in NCAA history, bested only by the two competitors ahead of him, Arizona's Lawi Lalang and Stephen Sambu, in the same race.
Gregson is seeded 15th in the women's mile. She ran a school record time of 4:38.85 at the UW Husky Classic on Feb. 10. It will be her second appearance at the NCAA Championship after competing in the same event as a sophomore in 2010 in Fayetteville, AR.
The men's 5k final takes place Friday (Mar. 9) at 10:05 pm ET. The 3k final commences Saturday (Mar. 10) at 9:55 pm ET. The women's mile preliminary rounds are on Friday at 7:15 pm ET with the final at 8:25 pm ET on Saturday.
