Bayley, Murphy Lead Iona at Colonial Relays
WILLIAMSBURG, VA - The Iona College men's outdoor track and field team competed at the 2011 Colonial Relays hosted by the College of William and Mary this weekend. Sophomores Matt Bayley and Craig Murphy led the Gaels in the meet with their finishes in the 3000- and 5000-meter events.
Bayley earned first place honors in the 3k out kicking Villanova senior Hugo Beamish by .07 seconds with his time of 8:19.68. Junior Mitch Goose was third in the event (8:26.26), finishing nearly seven seconds behind the top two finishers and 12 seconds ahead another Wildcat in fourth place. Sophomore Jimmy Tarsnane also finished in the top 10 in the 3k at seventh overall (8:44.20). Senior Joe Parks finished 18th.
Murphy was second in the 5k, blazing a time of 14:08.40. Though he finished 11 second behind the race winner from Harvard, Murphy out kicked Duquesne's Jim Spisak and Villanova's Keith Capecci for second. The two through four runners in the event were separated by .37 seconds. Junior Jason Weller was Iona's second finisher in the event in 14th place. Both Murphy and Weller ran personal best times and qualified for the IC4A Championship with their times. Junior Colin Culhane and freshman Brendan Farrell also ran personal best times in the 5k.
Also earning points for the Gaels in the two-day meet was senior Josh Hibbs with a sixth place performance in the 3000-meter steeplechase. Hibbs completed the race in 9:24.59.
Iona earned 29 points in the five events it participated in and finished 14th out of 36 teams at the Colonial Relays.
