Korir, Soderberg Lead Gaels At MAAC Championship
LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ- Juniors Leonard Korir and Alexander Soderberg led the Iona College men's outdoor track and field team at the 2011 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships held at Rider University. Korir won the 1500-meter event and Soderberg the 5000-meter run on the final day of the meet.
Korir missed setting a new MAAC Championship standard in the 1500 meter, falling five-hundredths of a second shy of former Gael standout Richard Kiplagat's mark in 2006. His time of 3:43.65 was almost two seconds faster than Rider's Christian Gonzalez. Sophomore Craig Murphy earned fourth place points with his time of 3:53.19. Korir earned his fourth individual MAAC Championship of the 2010-11 campaign after finishing first in the cross country meet in the fall and the indoor mile and DMR in the winter.
Soderberg out kicked teammate Matt Bayley in the 5k event to earn a second straight outdoor MAAC title. It was the third first place finish at a MAAC event for the Iona junior. Soderberg (14:39.08) topped Bayley (14:39.43) by .35 seconds. The duo finished more than 20 seconds ahead of the third place performer from Marist. Junior Colin Culhane earned fifth place points with his 15:16.00.
Iona finished fourth overall in the team standings.
Four Iona student-athletes were named to the MAAC All-Academic Team for their performance in the classroom. Murphy and Soderberg were joined by senior Josh Hibbs and junior Daniel Lipus on the squad. To be eligible for the MAAC All-Academic Team, a student athlete must complete two semesters at their institution and hold a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 on a 4.0 scale.
