Iona College men's basketball senior Scott Machado earned MAAC Player of the Week honors for his stellar performance at the 2011 5-hour ENERGY® Puerto Rico Tip-Off.
Machado had three double-doubles, recording 46 points (15.3/g), 41 assists (13.7/g), a 51.5% shooting effort from the field and just six turnovers (2.0/g) in three games this weekend's. Machado had 14 points, 11 assists vs. Purdue; 17 points, 15 assists vs. Western Michigan; and 15 and 15 with no turnovers vs. Maryland.
In Machado's effort, he shattered the tournament's record of 22 set in 2008 by USC's Daniel Hackett. The single game mark entering the weekend was 10 in last year's championship game by West Virginia's Joe Mazzulla. Machado eclipsed the mark in each game this season. The two 15 assist efforts matched his career-high from a year ago.
It was Machado's third career Player of the Week honor after winning the award twice last season on Jan. 3 and Feb. 21.
The Gaels posted a 2-1 record, falling to Purdue by a point before topping Western Michigan and Maryland to finish fourth at the tournament.
Iona hosts Saint Joseph's on Wednesday in their 2011 home opener. Tipoff is slated for 7:00 pm.
