NEW ORLEANS, LA - Five student-athletes from the Iona College men's track and field program were named to the 2012 USTFCCCA Division I All-Academic team. In addition, the team recognized as one of 85 institutions on the USTFCCA All-Academic Team list.
Graduate Alexander Soderberg, grad student Mitch Goose, rising senior Craig Murphy and rising sophomores Jake Byrne and Andrew Kowalsky were recognized for both their academic and athletic performances during the 2011-12 indoor and outdoor track seasons.
A total of 431 student-athletes representing 148 institutions compose the group. To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have met either of the following athletic standards: for the indoor season, a student-athlete must have finished the regular season ranked in the national top 96 in an individual event or ranked in the national top 48 (collective listing) in a relay event on the official NCAA POP list provided by TFRRS.org; for the outdoor season, a student-athlete must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Championships (including preliminary rounds).
The Iona quintet joined Manhattan's Roman Ewald and Albert Johnson and Rider's Mike Soroko as Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference's representatives on the list.
As a team, the Gaels were one of 85 institutions to earn the distinction as a result of a cumulative team GPA of 3.00 or better. Iona's 3.20 GPA ranked 29th among the teams honored.
