LAKE BUENA VISTA, FL - The Iona College men's cross country team earned its 22nd straight Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championship this morning at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. The Gaels extended their NCAA Division I-best conference championship stretch with one point shy of a perfect score.
Senior Mitch Goose was the individual MAAC Champion, finishing the 8k course in 24:08.08. It was the fifth fastest time in the meet's history at Disney. Junior Matthew Gillespie was runner up, finishing 13 seconds behind his teammate (24:21.12). Gillespie's time is now the eighth fastest time in MAAC Championship history in Florida.
Junior Daniel Clorley finished third overall and was followed by sophomore Jake Byrne. Clorely finished in 24:26.01 (11th all-time) while Byrne came in 24:30.78 (14th all-time).
After Rider's Anthony Dentino crossed in fifth, Iona sophomore Andrew Kowalsky, junior Chris Stogsdill and red shirt freshman Michael O'Dowd cross from sixth through eight. The Gaels had seven of the Top 10 and 11 of the Top 20 in the race.
Junior Jimmy Tarsnane was 11th, seniors Colin Culhane and Matt Bayley were 16th and 17th while sophomore Michael Champagne finished 18th.
Iona was one point shy of a perfect 15 in first place. The Gaels topped second place Marist (80) by 64 points. Rider (83), Canisius (94) and Fairfield (111) rounded out the top five. It was the Gaels 11th straight victory with a team score of less than 20.
The Maroon & Gold is back in action at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championship at Van Cortlandt Park on Saturday, Nov. 17.
