Iona Rowing Competes At The 2012 Knecht Cup

CAMDEN, NJ - The Iona College men and women rowing team took part in the 2012 Knecht Cup Regatta in Camden, NJ and reached the finals in two events, the men’s varsity 4+ and men’s novice 4+ over the weekend. 

Junior captains Jennifer Kearns and Amanda Kenny took fourth in the women’s pair heat. This was the first time this pair raced in a competitive race and will compete in the Spring Metropolitan Championship.

On the men’s side freshmen Andrew Serino and Matthew Buchanan took fourth in their heat beating NYU and Duquesne.

The women’s varsity 4 + comprised of senior Victoria Geiter, sophomores Cara Scriven, Elizabeth Morse, Ashley Tomblin, and freshman Sabrina Rocha finished sixth .

Iona had two men’s fours in the varsity 4+ event.

The “A” boat of junior Chrisanne Karcich, seniors Ryan Rourke, Kyle Daly, sophomore Christopher Palma and freshman Nicholas Bortells took fourth place with a time of 7:03.05 in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, the quad finished fifth and then in the petite finals, took third, defeating MAAC members Loyola and Marist along with Drexel.

The B 4+ was coxed by freshman Frederick Carter, sophomores Ernie Stinebrickner, Evan Johnson, Derek Krautkremer, and Greg Badura. The group took sixth in their heat.

The women’s novice four of freshmen Rebecca Silva, Lindsey Gartner, Phillicia Bacchus, Rocha and Morse raced in heat 8 and finished fourth ahead of Haverford and Catholic.

The men’s novice 4+ of freshmen Robert Strobel, Ryan Harding, Nicholas Adams, Thomas Baik and Carter took third in their heat just behind Drexel and USMMA. The men moved on to the semifinal and placed fourth and moved onto petite finals and finished fourth with a time of 7:31.09 ahead of Pittsburgh “A” and Rutgers-Camden.

The men’s varsity 8+ of Karcich, Rourke, Daly, Palma, Johnson, Krautkremer, Badura, Stinebrickner, and Bortells took sixth in their event.

The women’s novice 8+ consisting of freshmen Amanda Boyle, Elizabeth Dellinger, Olivia Sage, Savannah Lang, Victoria Baio, Mary Cain, Kara Urso, Nicole Tobin and Silva placed 5th beating Scranton “B”.

The Gaels will host the 2012 Spring Metropolitan Championships next Saturday.
