NEW ORLEANS, LA - The Iona College women's cross country team is ranked No. 9 in the USTFCCCA Division I Northeast Regional Rankings. The Gaels were eighth overall at the 2011 Northeast Regional Championship.
Iona returns nine of its 12 performers from last year's MAAC and regional championship races. Senior Hollie Rowland is the Gaels top returner after earning an individual bid into the NCAA Championship with a third place performance at regionals. She was 58th overall at the national championship in Terre Haute. Seniors Marion Joly-Testault and Erin Brady, juniors Katie Niblock, Kirsten Stewart and Courtney Veilleux and sophomores Lauren Calvino and Regina Neumeyer look to propel the Maroon & Gold to its eighth straight MAAC title while competing for a return to the NCAA race in November.
Reigning regional champion Syracuse was picked No. 1 on the poll. The Gaels are the only MAAC school in the Top 15 in the Northeast although Loyola Maryland was picked No. 14 in the Mid-Atlantic Region.
The Gaels have earned seven straight MAAC Championships, the longest active streak in NCAA Division I.
Iona opens the season on Saturday (Sep. 1) at the Marist Invitational in Poughkeepsie, NY.
The Iona College cross country / track & field program and the entire Iona community sends its thoughts and prayers to the USTFCCCA and those in the Gulf Coast region as they brace for the landfall of Tropical Storm Isaac.
