BUFFALO, NY – The 2017 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships got off to a big start on Wednesday night in Buffalo at the Erie Community College Flickinger Aquatic Center.
The Iona Women picked up a bronze medal in the 800-yard Freestyle Relay and a fifth place in the 200-yard Medley Relay. The Iona men gained silver - their highest placing in a MAAC relay in five years - in the 800-yard Free Relay and a sixth place in the 200-yard Medley Relay.
The early point standings after two events in the women's side finds Iona in fourth with 60-points. Defending champion Marist College and Rider University are 1-2 with 74 and 70-points, respectively. Canisius is in third with 66 and Iona has 60; they are followed by Siena, Niagara, Fairfield, Manhattan and Monmouth.
The men's standing after the two relay events and the one-meter Springboard find Canisius on top at 104, Bryant and Rider tied with 88, and Niagara at number four with 77. Marist is fifth at 64 and Iona stands in sixth at 60. Saint Peter's, Manhattan, Fairfield and Monmouth round out the field.
"Our splits were very strong tonight in both relays. Schmidt led off in a bets time of 1:56.51; followed by Kaczmarek at 1:54.80; Chain at 1:56.36 and Aliapoulios closed at 1:57.21. The men's race saw Foti was 1:40.37 in the leadoff, followed by Purrman at 1:40.68; Barnola 1:40.69 and Desrosiers was 1:39.71.
