Schultz Named Co-Offensive POTY; Vilander, Allen Tabbed Second Team

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - Three Iona Water Polo members were named to All-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference teams, as announced by the league Friday night. Junior Hannah Schultz was named to the first team and tabbed Co-Offensive Player of the Year, while juniors Britten Vilander and Kayla Allen were named to the All-MAAC Second team. Nine members of the Maroon & Gold were also named to the All-Academic team.

 

Schultz, a Preseason All-MAAC selection a two-time MAAC All-First Team member was named MAAC Offensive Player of the Week four times, and was tied for the MAAC lead with 89 goals, with 60 coming in conference play. The offensive juggernaut for the Maroon & Gold scored five or more goals a stellar 10 times this season and scored seven goals twice. She ranks fourth all-time in program history with 282 goals. As of Friday, she has totaled 94 points, 18 steals and 36 kickouts drawn this season.

Allen earns her first conference honor after placing third on the team in goals (39), second in kickouts drawn (27) and tied for second in steals with 38. She scored three or more goals five times in the season, with her season high coming on Apr. 2 against VMI where she posted four goals.

Vilander was a defensive force all season for the Gaels in net, appearing in all 23 games for the Maroon & Gold. She protected the net with a .472 save percentage, ranked fourth in the MAAC with 113 saves and led the conference with 68 steals in MAAC contests. She posted a career-best 15 saves against Marist and allowed a career-low three goals against Siena. As of Friday night, she has posted an 8.53 goals-against average this season.

In addition nine Gaels were named to the All-Academic team. To be eligible for the MAAC All-Academic Team, a student-athlete must complete two semesters at their institution and hold a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 on a 4.0 scale. Sophomores Alyssa Gayapa and Andrea Guerra, juniors Schultz, Vilander, Megan Hofer, Devika Joshi, Karli Normand, and seniors Rebecca Koshy and Darby Nevins represented the Maroon & Gold academically.
