PRINCESS ANNE, MD – Going into the day scheduled to play a noon doubleheader, the Iona College baseball team and Maryland Eastern Shore were able to play a single-game at 3 pm due to the inclement weather in the area. The Hawks (1-10) came out on top in the first game of the three-game series by a final score of 6-1.
Maryland Eastern Shore posted two runs in the bottom of the first on three hits and an error to create an early 2-0 advantage. Dominic DeBlasie plated Justin Somerville for the opening, unearned run with a single before Tyler Friis scored the second unearned run on a single up the middle from Jordan Wesley.
Iona (3-5) cut the deficit in the half in the top of the second behind three straight singles from Alex Beckett, Seth Hoagland and Dion Austrie. Austrie earned the RBI by driving in Beckett.
With the advantage down to one run, the Hawks scored the final four runs throughout the third and fifth innings. Jamison Trower drove in the lone run of the third inning before driving in two of the three runs during the fifth.
Hoagland and Niko Switalla each notched two of the team’s seven hits on the day while UMES had four players record two hits among the team’s 12 on the afternoon. Trower finished his day with a game-high three RBI. Starting pitcher Wesley Martin earned the victory with seven innings, scattering seven hits.
In relief for the Maroon & Gold, Andrew Pucillo tossed 3.1 shutout inning with one hit allowed and four strikeouts.
The two teams return to tomorrow to complete the three-game series with a noon doubleheader.
