NEW HAVEN, CT – Yale University rallied from a 5-2 deficit in the eighth inning by scoring seven runs to upend the Iona College baseball team 9-5 earlier this afternoon in non-conference action at Yale Field.
Two singles along with a walk loaded the bases for the Bulldogs (20-14) in the bottom of the eighth inning with no outs. Griffin Dey took advantage of the situation with an infield single to score one run before Brian Ronai brought Yale to within 5-4 after earning a RBI with a hit by pitch. Andrew Herrera produced the first out of the inning while also tying the game with a sacrifice fly to score Alex Boos.
With the game tied at 5-5, the Bulldogs’ first opportunity to take the lead was cut short by Seth Hoagland as the right fielder threw out Dey at home following a single to the outfield. However, Simon Whiteman broke the tie in the next at-bat with a RBI single to score Ronai with the go ahead run. Yale added a RBI single while also scoring on a wild pitch and a fielding error to conclude the seven-run inning.
Dey initially pushed Yale ahead in the bottom of the second inning with a two-run homerun. In the fourth, Iona (12-15) tied the game on a two RBI hit from Hoagland followed by a go ahead walk from Tyler Bruno with the bases loaded to score Alex Beckett and give the Maroon & Gold a 3-2 lead.
The Gaels added two more runs to the advantage in the sixth on a pair of wild pitches as Beckett and Hoagland each tallied a run to increase the margin to 5-2.
In the eighth, Yale netted just six hits to score the seven runs while taking advantage of a fielding error that scored the seventh and final tally of the frame.
Hoagland notched two of the team’s three hits on the day in addition to two RBI, a stolen base and a run scored. Lou Matarazzo recorded the other hit while the team accumulated eight walks with Stephen Hansen drawing two of them. Beckett scored twice and added a stolen base.
The Gaels return to New Rochelle this weekend to host rival Manhattan for a three-game series at City Park. The series is scheduled to begin on Saturday with a noon doubleheader.
